I am sure most of us have a nightmare dating story or two to tell. Even as a married mum of two, I get to hear about them from my friends, dating is quite the ride, isn’t it? That said, I love being married and being in a partnership with someone where it truly feels like a team – and I think everyone deserves that. No matter your age, everyone deserves a little piece of happiness and if that comes in the shape of romances, why the hell not? I guess if you get to 50 and are still single, or indeed newly single, it can feel like things are too late. You probably have a nice life carved out and it can feel like you don’t have time for dating. However, dating can be fun and if you’re lucky, like me, you get to find a team-mate at the end of it – so I say go for it! My best dates were foodies dates and I feel like as long as you have food at your date, it doesn’t matter how awkward things feel at first, food always has a way of bringing people together! Here are my top tips for dating at any age.

Finding The Right Dating Website

There are many different dating websites out there and by no means should you join them all. However, what I would recommend doing is finding the right dating website for you. There are generic dating websites or ones that have more of a niche. I had a quick look at Older Dating and they have a section specifically for over 50s dating and that looked pretty decent to me. By signing up to a website like this, you know you’re likely to meet someone at a similar stage of life to you and that can only be a good thing.

Creating A Dating Profile

Once you have decided on the website you want to join, you need to create a profile. This is what people will first see when you message them or they stumble across your profile. Pick out your favourite photo and use this as your profile photo – this is the one they’ll see first. You’ll be asked to write a paragraph or two about yourself – don’t be afraid to mention your age, what you are looking for and perhaps what your family life is like.

You don’t have to give too much away but I imagine if you’re someone over 50 dating you would like someone similar to you, so writing a little about yourself seems a sensible way to do this. Here’s where I’d pop in your favourite hobbies and always include your favourite food! It’s a great conversation starter and if you do happen to go on that first date, hopefully, it will be to a restaurant that you’ll actually both like. Metro wrote an article recently which said that talking about food on your dating profile makes you seem more attractive! So there you go, one top tip from me!

Getting Stuck In

After you have done this and you’re happy with your profile – you need to get stuck in. Whatever your age, I would recommend messaging some people; you don’t need to wait for them to come to you! Whether you’re looking for a fully-fledged romance or just some companionship, you absolutely deserve it so now is the time to go out there and get it!

Hopefully, you’ll get to the stage where you start talking to someone that you would like to meet and see how you get on with in real life. Choose somewhere public and always tell someone else where you are going – no matter your age, you always should stay safe when meeting someone new. I’d always suggest a restaurant as a first date. It’s a public setting, relaxed and you can pop to the bathroom if you need to pull your thoughts together. It’s easy to use food as a conversation starter and it’s really informal. It’s a great, solid place to start no matter your age. I’d avoid the pasta though, we don’t want any slurping on a first date! This is a fab article for the best foods to try on a first date  if you need some more guidance.

And there you have it, hints for dating no matter your age. I know that meeting new people can seem scary and I bet if you’re dating when you’re older this can seem even more daunting. However, you are deserving of something great and a life filled with loving people who have your back, and what better way to find someone new? Good luck!
