Home is definitely what you make of it so no matter what type of house you live in; you can certainly make it home. That said, there are times when your current property becomes unsuitable and all of the home furnishings in the world won’t make it work.
This year, with many of us stuck at home for longer periods of time people, have started to consider the suitability of their home and whether they need something different. Property portals such as Rightmove have seen an increase in searches for properties with space suitable for an office or more outdoor space. I know we have looked at moving to a house that has more ‘work’ friendly space but sometimes it’s knowing where to really start.

Buying a Bigger House
It is all well and good deciding your house isn’t quite right for your needs, but how do you know what sort of house would be better? Okay, we all would like a 10 bedroom mansion with plenty of space, parking and a swimming pool but that sadly isn’t a reality for most of us. (I wish!)
One of the first things you need to is get a valuation on the house you already own. It is recommended that you get valuations from a couple of estate agents so you can an accurate picture of how much your property is likely to sell for. Next, you’ll want to look at what is financially viable when it comes to your new purchase. Trying a mortgage calculator is a great first step. This allows you to work out what your finances look like and what your rough budget looks like. If this is all a bit new to you (like me) the calculator is a great place to start. You can then start to research what properties are available within your budget and if you are likely to be able to afford something better suited than where you live now.

What Does My New House Look Like?
Knowing you would like to move house and actually deciding where you would like to move to are two very different things. Deciding where you and your family are going to live and buying a new house is a massive commitment, so you’ll want to make sure you get it right.
It is recommended that you put together a list of what you would like from a new house. Speak to the whole family and get them involved in working out what they would all like a new house to look like. The chances are you’ll end up with a pretty extensive list and you probably won’t find a property that ticks every single box.
Go through the list what work out what are absolute necessities and what things would just be nice. Of course, the budget is going to be top of the list because whatever type of house you want, you need to be able to afford it! You then might want to consider nearby schools, transport links and shops. The size of the house, number of bedrooms, parking and outdoor space are usually quite high up the list of people’s priorities too.
Start all of this now and you’ll be well on your way to moving into your dream home in 2021 and maybe we will too– good luck!
