I’m really not as well travelled as I would like to be. I really hope that in the future I’m able to travel frequently and really get the chance to explore as many different places as possible. There are so many possibilities out there and I think I’ve only actually been to six countries (none after I had kids). It’s not because I have kids now that I haven’t travelled; it’s more than since my kids have been able to travel, Covid has got in the way of our plans.
This year really should have been the year that we left the country as a unit of 4 for the very first time, but it just couldn’t happen because of the state of international travel right now. We’re too scared that we would end up in a different country and get forced to quarantine for 14 days, completely spoiling our plans. It wouldn’t be so bad if we had to do it once we got home, but I really don’t think we would have a fun experience if we had to do it out there.
One problem that I have when I’m abroad is that I tend to stick to tourist spots. I’ve tried all-inclusive before and I would never do anything different again. It’s too good, being able to have set meals at set times and not have to worry about finding a place that suits my needs. That said, any time I might leave the resort, if I eat out, I’ll probably only ever eat at a fast food place. It’s familiar, but it can still be quite different.
Five Guys has slowly become my go-to for fast food when I’m out of town. It’s a little more expensive than others, but their burgers really are the best. That’s why I imagine the Five Guys Daphne is amazing, but I’d also like to try it in LA or somewhere else too.
I couldn’t believe it the first time I went to New York and stepped into a KFC. In the UK we’re used to selecting from a handful of different dishes with the chicken cook a particular way, and just getting fries and a side with it. Out there, you have so many more choices, plus you get a biscuit with your food. We found the same with McDonalds too, and I’d really love to give it a try again. I’ve seen for myself how they adapt the fast food menus abroad. For example, the McDonald’s branches in other countries are actually unrecognisable to the menus that we get at home.
I always have to come back to Five Guys though. Although I hear good things about the US Burger Kings (which I haven’t actually tried) I need to see just how much fun it is to eat at a Five Guys in the very country it came from, and see if it’s able to live up to my high expectations – which are already pretty high, based on the choice we have over here.
